Makonde Rural District Council (RDC) is a key local government authority in Zimbabwe’s Mashonaland West Province. Its establishment in 1993 marked a significant turning point in rural governance, as it was formed through the amalgamation of three previously distinct councils: the Umboe Rural Council (which covered large-scale commercial farming areas), the Chitomborwizi Rural Council (for small-scale commercial farming areas), and a portion of the Chirorodziva District Council (which served communal areas). This consolidation aimed to unify local administration, dismantle the legacy of racially divided governance from the colonial era, and create more efficient and viable administrative units.
The Makonde District, under the RDC’s jurisdiction, spans approximately 8,680 square kilometers and is divided into 19 wards, all falling under the traditional authority of Chief Nemakonde. Historically, the district has been a strong agricultural hub, producing crops such as cotton, maize, and tobacco, and engaging in commercial cattle farming. Copper mining has also contributed to its economy.
Since its inception, Makonde RDC has operated under the mandate of the Rural District Councils Act [Chapter 29:13]. This legislation empowers the council to administer its area, drive rural development, and provide essential social and infrastructural services to its residents. These services typically include maintaining road networks, ensuring access to clean water and sanitation, supporting healthcare and education facilities, managing waste, and promoting local economic development initiatives. The council continues to play a vital role in improving the quality of life for its residents by fostering growth and providing critical services in alignment with national development strategies.
